Eve Sheedy

Eve Sheedy, Executive Director of the Los Angeles County Domestic Violence Council, which is housed in the Health Promotion Bureau of the Department of Public Health, immediately brought her skills as an attorney to the victims and survivors of Los Angeles County. As a public health leader for the city, she continuously connects the many dots of this issue, driving forward the data, and educating the public on how domestic violence threatens the public's overall health.

"The field started by showing all these pictures of women who were severely beaten and although that raised the profile of DV to some degree, it also alienated a number of people because women who didn't look like that did not feel that they were DV victims."

"When I went to college, I studied women's rights. No one mentioned violence against women. I couldn't believe that to be honest, I couldn't believe that someone would have a conversation about women's rights without addressing this violence that happens throughout the world."

"People do not generally experience one problem in their community, they may have multiple issues. So we work very hard in DV, to break down the silos. I'm working with the Department of Mental Health, sitting on the crisis response structure. When a law enforcement response may not be the needed response, I bring a domestic violence voice to the table to make sure people understand, because it's not just survivors, and people who are abusive, it's their families, their colleagues... it's our community."
