Bernita Walker's sense of community engagement can be seen through her work as deputy sheriff, in her many training sessions with officers, and in the organizations she has started over the last 40 years. Her community is deeply embedded in personal experiences, and in the many roles she has performed over the years. In her own words, she is a survivor, teacher, warrior, and servant.

"We are in a war, the war for peace, civility, equality, love. I mentioned all of those things because I am a warrior. I am a servant in this war."

"It's community we need. We need to teach, we need to be willing to share. This is a community issue. It is a social issue. It is a health issue. We keep being separated by these types of issues, instead of us coming together to address them. We have got to learn how to live together and work together. People are dying because of our silos. We have to work against this as a country, as a being, a human being. Because we're all involved in this answer."
